Pants Size: Bossy

Pants Size: Bossy

By: Maci Johnson

In her funny, coming-of-age story, Bossypants, actress and comedienne, Tina Fey details important parts in her life that made her the boss she is today. From believing her menstrual cycle would be a blue liquid to producing movies with a child on her hip, Fey’s book details the life of a girl who grew to be a legend in Hollywood. I believe Fey is qualified to write this book because her story can resemble anyone’s life. She is relatable. True, she (along with friend and fellow actress, Amy Poehler) is one of the most known actresses of our time, but her story can speak to any person….specifically, women. This book is a source of public relations for Fey because it is showing female audiences the heights they can reach in a male-dominated world. In her book, Fey had no problem telling anybody what to do or how to do it in order to get things done, a trait most consider “bossy”. However, I see it as empowering. This book can serve as a platform to young girls to encourage them to be confident in their abilities. Don’t let society or the media dictate where you can go, which is what I admire most about this book. From her feminist standpoint, Fey’s tone is encouraging, yet unwavering. Although hilarious, it uplifts, which is definitely needed for girls growing up today.

I HIGHLY recommend this book. Two thumbs up, standing ovation, ENCORE! Tina Fey is comedic genius and inspiring at the same time. I do think at times the stories were sort of all over the place, but its message is astounding. Way to go, Tina Fey! Keep your head high and your “bossypants” higher!

Bossypants Review

By Alex Thomas

Tina Fey begins her chapter, "I Don't Care If You Like It" with a story about her friend Amy Pohler who was looked down upon at first by her raunchy and "unladylike" jokes but did not care what people thought of her. She mentions after this that if people do not like what you're doing you need to stop and think, "Is this person between me and what I want to do?" I think this reveals that Fey is a very empowered woman that has not let anyone stand in the way of her success. This is a prevalent topic throughout the book with her "feminist" undertones she proves to be a strong, successful woman who worked hard to get where she is.

Tina Fey started from humble beginnings, much to my disbelief. You assume stars are born famous, but in Fey's life, this was not the case. She seems from her book that as a child she always had a keen since of humor throughout her adolescent years on into her high school years. Fey had a fairly normal childhood and routinely worked a job at a local theatre after getting into high school. She worked there throughout high school and after graduating went to the University of Virginia. She worked her way through school and when she graduated attended a school called Second City. This is where she made her start and eventually landed herself on SNL.

The topic of the book is obviously the story of how Tina Fey came to be and her road to success. She gives great detail from every point of her life from her puberty years on into her college years where she talks about odd end jobs she worked. You feel like you know Fey by the end of the book because of how much detail she provides in her biography.

Fey covered her life very thoroughly and provided comic relief throughout the entire course of the book. When she would bring up serious topics, it was often deferred by one of her witty jokes. The book is a bit choppy though its like one moment she is talking about her childhood then the next second she is talking about her jobs in college. Although it does move around a lot, you really get to know a side of the star that you wouldn't normally see. This book enables the public to see a celebrity as a real person, not just as an actor. Woman that are in their mid 20's looking for jobs or any kind of reassurance in the professional world, should read this book.

Tina Fey, the author of the book, “Bossy Pants, is uniquely qualified to write the book because she is speaking from her own personal experiences. This book is an extremely useful public relations tool for the author because the front cover of the book incorporates Tina Fey’s name in large bold letters. This is a way to promote her name. This book also gives a personal experience of Tina’s life, told from her first person point of view. This allows Fey to promote herself while also giving readers a real insight of who she is and where she comes from. I thought the writing style was extremely humorous, light, and sarcastic. The writing style really portrays Fey’s personality. I learned about Fey’s background and how she became who she is today. I would definitely recommend this book to others. It is a great read for students my age because the book is very light and an easy read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

 Stand Out Scene

The chapter, “All Girls Must be Everything” really stood out to me. Fey and her cousin spend a weekend at Wildwood Beach in New Jersey. As a girl walked by in a bikini, Fey’s cousin Janet said, “Look at the hips on her.” This caused Fey to panic because she never noticed the differences between women’s hips. Fey continues to give a list of the infinite number of things that can be “incorrect” on a woman’s body. This list included anything from women having big pores to thin lashes. I found this scene to be essential to Fey’s personality. She is very sarcastic, real, and blunt. It was interesting to hear Fey go through the process of learning about the issues women constantly battle with within themselves.

 Subject of the Book

Throughout this light-hearted and humorous book, Tina Fey discusses her awkward adolescent days that shaped her into becoming the woman she is today. Fey discusses the acting and theatre businesses, as well as her premature love life and interests. Fey gives the reader a real background to who she is and how she has achieved her goals along the way.

Book Critique

Fey covered her life extremely thoroughly, keeping the reader engaged by adding her raw and sarcastic sense of humor. The strengths of this book are the realness of the content. Fey never sugar coats anything she went through in her life. This lets the reader know that the author is relatable and true. One of the very few weaknesses I felt from this book was the fact that this was a very slow read for me. I found myself wanting a little more action or substance at times. Otherwise, I found this biography to be extremely amusing and humorous. This is a great read when one is seeking something light and fun.

A comic relief for the working woman

By Rachael Montgomery
Public Relations Sophomore

When Tina Fey—an extremely successful writer, actress and comedian— creates a diagram of her daily stress level from various jobs, and it makes you both laugh and cringe at the same time because you can relate, you know you’re in trouble. Why? Because if you’re like me, or really millions of other working women, you’re not celebrity/working mother. But somehow despite the deadlines, never-ending stream of work and constant scrutiny from the press, Tina Fey manages to pull it off and make it look effortless.
Tina Fey was born in 1970 in Pennsylvania. From her youth, she displayed a connection to the stage and a knack for acting. Although she has worked at non acting-related jobs, such as the YMCA in Chicago for a brief period of time, most of her career has centered around writing, acting and producing in comedy-related shows and sketches. She got her start at Second City, which is the world’s premiere comedy club/theater and school of improvisation. From there she met many of her colleagues that she would later work with as Saturday Night Live. After 10 years with SNL, she wrote the hit NBC show “30 Rock” and the quasi teen cult film “Mean Girls.”
Tina Fey is uniquely qualified to write this book because she is a boss herself. She’s not just a working women commenting on her boss, in fact, several times she states that if it weren’t for her, the whole production staff for her various shows and projects would be without work.
This book is an excellent public relations tool for her to use to create openness between her and her fans and audience. She even encourages engagement from readers after she discusses her response to negative feedback. Since public relations can often be used by offering specific publics information free of advertisements, this book is advantageous in that it can be used by working women as a guidebook for being a boss and just all it entails, and it can also be used for entertainment.
I cannot doubt that Tina Fey is hilarious; however, I personally feel that she over did the jokes and puns—almost to the point where they were distracting and got old. However, her use of visual aids was brilliant and thoroughly enjoyed. Her writing style is informal and conversational, so for an autobiography it’s ideal.
While I learned many things from this book, what I found most useful was how Fey deals with criticism and negative feedback. Instead of responding to it and defending herself—most people’s first instinct—she rises above it because she realizes that despite how offensive and inaccurate the allegations can be, she’d just be stooping to the level of her critics.
I would recommend this book to working women, mothers and any other women interested in getting a good laugh. However, unless they enjoy reading about issues exclusive to women and being a mother, I would not suggest this to a man. Overall, it was a witty, informative and poignant book that I intend to keep on my shelf for the years to come.

Hello,

My name is Amy Robinson and I am 21 years old. I am a junior studying public relations at the University of Oklahoma. I also have a minor in communication. I have lived in Oklahoma for most of my life and I lived on Grand Lake until recently when my parents moved to Joplin, Missouri. I also have 3 dogs that I’m obsessed with. Their names are Nacho, Sophie and Coco.

I have an interest in fashion PR so one day I am hoping I will be doing something in my PR career with clothes or jewelry. I used to work at small boutique, which sparked my interest in fashion. I like to keep up with current trends and learning about new designers or fashion lines that are becoming popular. I am not really picky about where I live in the future but I am hoping to stay in the South because since I am from a small town, I like being close to my family and I like the feeling of “Southern hospitality.”

A little bit about me

By Lauren Leaver

Hi!

My name is Lauren Leaver and I am a junior public relations major at the Gaylord College at the University of Oklahoma. I have changed my major numerous times, but I love to write, so that's probably why I ended up in the school of journalism.

A little known fact about me is that I was born in Japan. My dad was in the military my whole life so I have moved several times all around the country. I have lived in Georgia, Florida, California, Washington and now I'm in the wonderful state of Oklahoma.

I don't know where I'll end up after graduation, but hopefully somewhere exciting. The sky's the limit, so who knows!

About Randi Gill

Hello All!

My name is Randi Gill and I am senior at the University of Oklahoma. I am pursuing a triple degree in Public Relations, International and Area Studies and Spanish and minoring in Enterprise Studies and Communication. You are probably thinking "overachiever!" and truthfully I just found each subject interesting and decided to major in all three. I started learning Spanish when I was in elementary school and I fell in love with the language. I even met my boyfriend in Spain! He is in the picture below! He is a cutie right? Since I grew up learning another language and about another culture, I found other cultures and languages fascinating. This lead to my International and Area Studies degree. Finally, I have always loved communicating with others and building relationships. Public relations seemed to be the perfect fit for me. Now, my whole life does not revolve around school. I am an avid scuba diver and traveler. I love to go to football games (hello I live in Oklahoma and go to OU!) and go to Oklahoma City Thunder games. Cooking and baking is another one of my passions. My Grandma was a true "southern belle" and she gave me all of her family recipes! If you come to my house for dinner you will not be disappointed! Just ask my boyfriend!
