Likeable was named to both the 2011 and 2012 Inc. 500 list of fastest growing privately owned companies in the United States.

Kerpen focuses on simple, yet effective marketing techniques that can be employed by any business. Suggestions like listening to your customers, engaging with your customers and being authentic to your customers through your online interactions with them are major themes carried throughout the entire book. Kerpen challenges readers to ask questions of their online audiences in addition to requesting feedback from them and following up by responding to comments, both those that are positive and negative, in a timely manner.

The most important advice Kerpen offers his readers is to be authentic in your online communications and to provide free value to your audience through your posts. As a social media marketer, I have found these two techniques vital to maintaining a positive online presence. Kerpen provides examples from his own experience that proves that authenticity and value are keys to being successful social media marketers. The book is a quick and easy read that is perfect for newcomers to the world of social media, but may not be as helpful to those already highly-involved in this industry.

Likeable Social Media is a well-written advice book providing real-world examples that demonstrate both success and failures. The author encourages authenticity and interaction with your business’ audiences, and practices these methods himself. He encourages readers of the book to ask him and his colleagues at Likeable questions on their Facebook and Twitter pages. In addition, you can find Kerpen, himself, on both Twitter and Facebook. My View of the Corner Office

Author: Scott Aylward and Pattye Moore
Length: 229 pages
Publisher: Wiley
Price: $24.95

My View of the Corner Office
By Morgan McMullen

Getting married again, your spouse won’t mind. The title of chapter one makes one wonder what they are really reading about. Then as Pattye and Scott go on to explain they are corporate soul mates things start to make sense. As explained in chapter one of the book, finding someone who is like-minded, challenges you, and will be a ruthless but constructive critic is part of finding your corporate soul mate. Pattye and Scott then go on to explain how they have counted on each other numerous times during their careers to have the support one would normally gain from a spouse or partner. In the industry it is very beneficial to have someone who understands the world you are living in and how things work.
With years of agency experience both Pattye and Scott have become experts in their fields. Neither Moore not Aylward have more training then bachelor degrees and years of experience but in the industry experience speaks for itself. Both have been CEO, Vice-President, President, and Senior Executives at one company or another throughout their career and now they run INSTINCTS, LLC together.
Confessions is very beneficial to anyone who would like to be a good boss someday. Working in the entertainment industry is not necessary for learning the skills described in this book. Moore and Aylward discuss the difficulties of managing family and work, firing employees, and how to become a good leader in 15 short chapters. They do a great job of giving you self check points to see if you really are doing each instinct or if you need to work on something. If you need to work on a skill they also provide a list of things you can do to improve.

This was a quick read and very useful for anyone who would not only like to make it to the corner office but would like to be a good manager or boss. One of the strength’s the book had was giving personal examples throughout so people could really get a sense of who Pattye and Scott are. The only weakness the book had was not going into more detail at the beginning of each chapter. It was meant to lead you into the chapter but more of the example given would have been a nice addition.
The book is great for anyone in college to learn the steps to success, it would also be very beneficial to anyone in a management position. Some of the instincts discussed are things management avoid and don’t do well. Reading this book gives you an insight into what a good leader should be doing on a regular basis for there employees instead of settling for mediocre like most managers do. Anyone looking to have a career should invest in this book and learn these instincts.

How Do You Plan to Make it to the Corner Office?
By Mikala Ewald

“How you build and maintain relationships, motivate those around you, instill confidence in all who work with you, and maintain an impressive level of self-awareness can make or break your career.” This is just one valuable piece of advice from Scott Aylward and Pattye Moore in their book, “Confessions from the Corner Office: 15 Instincts That Will Help You Get There”.

“Confessions from the Corner Office” is an informative guide that provides readers with 15 business and leadership instincts essential to climbing the corporate ladder (click here to read an excerpt from the book). The authors, Scott Aylward and Pattye Moore, injected this guide with their charming personalities, including back-and-forth banter between the two, making this book an easy read rather than a boring business book. The authors offer a wealth of business sense they learned throughout their successful careers.

Scott Aylward is the former President and CEO of Barkley Evergreen and Partners, which is the largest employee-owned advertising agency in the United States. Aylward met his co-author, Pattye Moore, when his company was hired to do the advertising for the Sonic Corporation of which Moore was the president. During the time Aylward and Moore represented Sonic, the business grew from less than $900 million to just over $3 billion in system-wide sales. Aylward and Moore went on to open their own consulting business, Instincts, LLC, which specializes in brand development.

The book centers on the idea that you should have a passion for your career and must be willing to work hard to become successful. The book is divided into two parts: attitude instincts and performance instincts. While some of the ideas in the book are somewhat generic pieces of business advice (such as learning to listen, remembering to take time for yourself and the importance of networking), the authors also offer a unique perspective not often found in business books.

For instance, chapter one is titled “Get Married Again—Your Spouse Won’t Mind: Corner Office Instinct 1: Find a Corporate Soul Mate”. This chapter focuses on the idea that having someone with similar goals and business sense to discuss problems and ideas with will help you rise to the top. Aylward and Moore support their ideas with their own personal experiences, both successes and failures.

The honesty and straightforward conversation about the fifteen instincts allows the reader to really connect with the authors. Both Aylward and Moore share very personal details of their lives in order to help the reader understand the importance of the fifteen instincts, and to encourage young professionals to preserve while working toward their career goals. I think their transparency is key to the success of the book.

While at times charming, the back-and-forth conversation between the two authors at the beginning of each chapter often falls flat and seems forced, it does help you understand the personality differences of the two. The personal anecdotes about their experiences in the office provide illustration to the fifteen instincts.

Overall, the authors provide great business instincts that are attainable. The honesty and transparency provided by the authors makes them relatable, unlike many bigwigs from the business world. I believe, if put into action, these instincts will allow you to move forward in your career.
